Size: 1.2oz Pouch

The hero of many holiday favorites (think mulled wine, eggnog, pumpkin loaf, gingersnaps), cloves add a spicy sweetness that just can't be replicated. And just like unexpected houseguests, a little goes a long way. But we also love the wonderful warmth and character that this spice brings to braises, stews and traditional Indian dishes, such as garam masala. Our cloves are locally sourced from smallholder farmers, where they are hand-picked, brought to a processing center, washed, dried and sorted by hand.

Tip: Remove whole cloves before serving because even when cooked, they have a hard, woody texture.

Origin

Kandyan Forest, Sri Lanka

We're proud to source our cloves from farms in Sri Lanka that focus on quality, community, and biodiversity, especially as it pertains to regenerative and sustainable farming methods. At its core, regenerative agriculture is farming in harmony with nature. Growers take a broader view of their role in the world, emphasizing soil and nutrient cycles. This practice focuses on, to name a few, topsoil regeneration, increasing biodiversity, improving the water cycle, and increasing resilience to climate change.

The very nature of community businesses reduces our carbon footprint as products travel an incredibly short distance (often by foot) from where the raw product is harvested to where it is processed and packaged at a plant mainly run by women from the village.

Tips for Success

  • You can use this spice whole to infuse into a dish but not advised to eat whole like other whole spice seeds.
  • The flavor compounds in cloves dissolve into oil and not water.
  • Use this spice early in the dish to mellow out some of the bitter flavors. Cloves are often used with other warm spices to bring out the sweetness.

FAQ

What is farm-direct sourcing and how do you source your spices?

We work as close to the source as possible, this often means directly importing from the farmer or cooperatives who source directly from farms. Each year we purchase the annual harvest for each spice we carry to ensure maximum freshness.

Are these spices certified organic?

Unfortunately we do not have any certifications at this time but most of our spices are organically grown and all of them are non gmo. Each ingredient can be traced back to its origin. Email support@spicetribe.com for any questions.

Do you have recipes to go with this spice?

Yes! We have an ever expanding recipe library of chef tested recipes. Please shoot us an email if there are any recipes you would like to see at support@spicetribe.com.

How old are these spices?

We purchase what we need every year right after the spices are harvested. These spices are as fresh as you can get. They are not sitting in a warehouse for multiple years. The oldest spices we carry will be one year old compared to the commodity market which warehouses spices for 10+ years.
