Kandyan Green Cardamom

Eucalyptus, Mint, Citrus

Size: 1.3oz Pouch

Often referred to as the queen of spices, cardamom reigns supreme in authentic Indian dishes like curries and masalas, but it's also used worldwide to bump up the flavor of beverages, pastries, rice dishes, meat, poultry, and more. Cardamon requires plenty of rain and shade to grow, making the higher elevation on the outskirts of the Knuckles Mountain Range in Sri Lanka an ideal match—one that also protects the biodiversity of this stunningly beautiful area. When ready for harvest, the pods are hand-picked, carefully dried, and sorted by hand according to size, weight, and color.

Interesting to note: Whole pods can be chewed after spicy meals to cleanse the breath.

Whole Cardamom Pods

Kandyan Forest, Sri Lanka

We're proud to source our cardamom from farms in Sri Lanka that focus on quality, community, and biodiversity, especially as it pertains to regenerative and sustainable farming methods. At its core, regenerative agriculture is farming in harmony with nature. Growers take a broader view of their role in the world, emphasizing soil and nutrient cycles. This practice focuses on, to name a few, topsoil regeneration, increasing biodiversity, improving the water cycle, and increasing resilience to climate change.

The very nature of community businesses reduces our carbon footprint as products travel an incredibly short distance (often by foot) from where the raw product is harvested to where it is processed and packaged at a plant mainly run by women from the village.

Tips for Success

  • Cardamom is a potent spice, so it's important to use it sparingly to avoid overpowering your dish. Start with a small amount and taste as you go.
  • Toasting cardamom pods before using them can help to bring out their flavor. Simply heat a dry skillet over medium heat and add the whole cardamom pods. Toast for a few minutes, stirring occasionally, until fragrant.
  • The pods contain flavorful seeds inside, so rather than removing the seeds from the pods, use the whole pod in your cooking and remove them before serving. If you want to release the flavor of the seeds inside the cardamom pods, lightly crush them before adding them to your dish. This can be done using a mortar and pestle or the flat side of a knife.

What is farm-direct sourcing and how do you source your spices?

We work as close to the source as possible, this often means directly importing from the farmer or cooperatives who source directly from farms. Each year we purchase the annual harvest for each spice we carry to ensure maximum freshness.

Are these spices certified organic?

Unfortunately we do not have any certifications at this time but most of our spices are organically grown and all of them are non gmo. Each ingredient can be traced back to its origin. Email for any questions.

Do you have recipes to go with this spice?

Yes! We have an ever expanding recipe library of chef tested recipes. Please shoot us an email if there are any recipes you would like to see at

How old are these spices?

We purchase what we need every year right after the spices are harvested. These spices are as fresh as you can get. They are not sitting in a warehouse for multiple years. The oldest spices we carry will be one year old compared to the commodity market which warehouses spices for 10+ years.
