Clearance Sofrito Blend

This herbaceous and aromatic seasoning blend is a staple in the Puerto Rican kitchen and is the backbone of many of our savory dishes. I wanted to take the same bold flavors of cilantro, peppers, onions, and garlic and introduce them as a dry spice blend, for a simple way to add a punch of flavor to each of your meals. Use this blend anywhere you’d use aromatics: stews and soups, curries, rice dishes, even as a marinade for protein. When in doubt, put sofrito in it.

Origin & Sourcing

Puerto Rico

Named for Ayuba Ibn Sulayman, a Fulani noble who was captured, enslaved brought to Maryland, emancipated and sent back to his home in Futa Djallon in Guinea; and Duchess Quamino, an enslaved and later free Black woman, born in Ghana in 1739 who was an esteemed baker and cook in colonial Rhode Island. I wanted to celebrate two Black lives that represent both resistance and cultural persistence. So few lives of West and Central Africans in early America are documented and I wanted these two Ancestors to stand in for the thousands who would give rise to a nation within a nation.

Based on my travels in 8 nations in contemporary West Africa, this part of the collection is inspired by the spicy, ruddy, earthy flavors this region of Africa is known for. Think peanut-based groundnut stew or grilled suya–a type of West African kabob dish, specifically from the southern Sahel and savanna, the kind of foods that Ayuba would have known in his homeland; or the okra soups and leafy green dishes and fish or grilled seafood or corn Duchess knew in Fante land. It’s a nice addition to Jollof rice or to finish fried plantains without being overpowering.

Frequently Asked Questions

FAQ How old are these spices?

We purchase what we need every year right after the spices are harvested. These spices are as fresh as you can get. They are not sitting in a warehouse for multiple years. The oldest spices we carry will be one year old compared to the commodity market which warehouses spices for 10+ years before selling them to you.

Do you have recipes to go with these spices?

Yes! We have an ever expanding recipe library of chef tested recipes. Please shoot us an email if there are any recipes you would like to see at support@spicetribe.com.

Can I buy spices for corporate gifts?

Yes you can. Please direct all corporate gifts related inquiries to wholesale@spicetribe.com.

Do spices lose their flavor after the "Best by" date?

Don’t worry if your spices are past their best-by date. When sealed, our spices maintain their quality for about 3 years. After opening, they remain flavorful for an additional 2-3 years if stored properly. While the best-by date indicates peak freshness, our spices still deliver great flavor and are safe to use well beyond that date.
