Whether my passion for cooking and sharing food comes from nature or nurture I may never know, but one thing’s for sure: These stewy, smoky flavors of the south and southwest—among our family’s favorite travel destinations—are inextricably linked to my West Coast upbringing. From popcorn dust to barbecue marinades to a smashing sofrito, California Love’s flavor notes rumble, but don’t tingle, despite the chiles—use it to add heartiness (and heart) to savory dishes.

With Chef Trent - Founder

Trent Blodgett's journey started from battling chronic depression to finding solace and purpose in cooking. Trained to cook at an upscale Spanish restaurant in San Francisco led to a chef position running large events and pop up dinners throughout the Bay Area. Immersed in the captivating world of flavors and scents, Trent became fascinated by the history and cultural influences of cuisine.

Driven by his newfound passion, Trent embarked on extensive travels, collecting spices that reminded him of the diverse culinary experiences he encountered. Cooking became his medicine and meditation, transforming his outlook on life. This transformative journey led Trent to establish Spice Tribe, a platform to share his spice blends, stories, and the belief that a shift in cooking perspective can profoundly impact one's existence.

Tips for Success

Cooking tips from our chefs

Clumping is normal as we don’t use anti caking agents or salt. If clumping occurs simply break apart with your hands before seasoning. Try not to pour spices out of the jar over a steaming pot or pan as the steam can get in the jar and cause further clumping. For maximum flavor make sure to use with salt. Ground spices can burn quickly so make sure to use oil to help distribute the heat more evenly when making a rub.

    Versatile and yummy.

    This is very good on a lot of things especially chicken. I added it to my homemade pimento cheese, and it was what it had been missing to make it perfect. Try it out. You will get compliments on whatever you add it to.

How do you use this blend?

EVERYTHING! This is an all purpose chile powder that you can use anywhere you want chile flavor but without the heat. Especially perfect for taco night or a pot of chili but we use this blend daily and it can be used with all of our other blends. Here are some more ideas: Roast chicken over onions and potatoes, grilled corn with lime, use it as you would any chile powder, taco seasoning or Cajun seasoning (only salt- free!), carnitas or braised beef, breakfast hash.

Where does the name come from?

This blend was inspired by the love for cooking my father instilled in me growing up in California. My earliest memories are of cooking together and my dad was obsessed with chiles. He would grow chiles and always have bags of chiles ready to make a paste that would find its way into every meal including pasta dough! – Trent
